Gold from the mine – 3th week of Mackmyra Month

Mackmyra Gruvguld (Gold from the mine) has been aged in small casks of 30, 100 and 128 litres, in the mine of Bodås, 50 metres below ground.

This whisky is a tribute to our powerful 30-litres casks that has been with us since the start of Mackmyra, and more than half of the finished result was aged in these casks of different oak types and finishes.

The new make that was aged, is mainly of the unpeated recipe, with an exception of a few smoky casks for a small spiciness addition. In the wide variety of casks used, there are also some that previously stored oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry.

A WORD FROM THE MASTER BLENDER

During her regular tastings in the Bodås mine and on the island Fjäderholmarna, our Master Blender Angela D’Orazio, sometimes come across casks that distinguish themselves from the rest. For a long time, Angela have dreamt of making something really special with these casks. That’s why we created the Mackmyra Moment series: our most unique casks in very limited editions.

– We have a number of casks in Bodås and at Fjäderholmarna that are so exquisite that it would be a shame to use them in our large bottlings, where their unique character will blend into the masses. That’s why we, for some time now, have talked about finding some other way to release this exclusive whisky to the public, Angela says.

EXCLUSIVE WHISKY IN EXCLUSIVE CLOTHES

Mackmyra Moment is a series of whiskies from our most exclusive casks, handpicked by Master Blender Angela D’Orazio. Each edition comes in a distinguished black carton with a specific colour scheme and a modern bottle design with an engraved metal plaque.

Since the number of casks per bottling are so few, the editions in the Moment series are very limited. The first editions to be released were Moment Medvind and Moment Urberg who where launched on 15 December 2010 in the exclusive range at the Swedish monopoly store Systembolaget.

Since then, several unique Moment editions have been released. Read more about them in the menu to your left.

MOMENT PRESTIGE

Volume: 70 cl / Alc: 46,1 % vol.

Moment Prestige is an eleven year old whisky aged on casks of French oak that previously held wine from the artisinal Champagne producer Philipponnat.

When making Champagne, Philipponnat only uses the finest grapes, mainly from Premier and Grand cru vineyards, and then let parts of the wine age on oak casks. To the whisky, these casks bring crisp notes of white wine, grapefruit, bread and toasted oak.

The youngest part of the whisky has been aged between the years 2006 – 2017, and the oldest part, which makes up 40% of the total volume, was aged between the years 2004 – 2017.

Winter is Coming … and Mackmyra

Well, let’s see who is an open minded whisky enthousiast and who is not.

A lot of people swear by Scotch and I have to say they do make some really good stuff, but it’s quiet similar to the beer industry. Big companies sometimes stick to what they know, what sells good and so on.

Mackmyra is a fairly young distillery, but they managed to create great quality, Single Malt and did this in a unique way. A Swedish way!

They blend small casks, under 200L, with larger cask which gives intense aroma’s for fairly young whisky. Often they season there own casks with typical Swedish products and creating in this way a flavor palette that’s rather different from other whiskies you will have tried before.

In my humble opinion this is a great, modern, durable distillery, with a nice story behind it, but with a great, unique approach on how to produce whisky that distiguishes itself from other brands.

With winter coming, I thought it was time to put this distillery in the spotlight with their heartwarming drams.

Springbank distillery month – Final week

Hazelburn 13 Year Old Oloroso is the unpeated and triple distilled Springbank spirit aged in a mix of first-fill and refill sherry casks. They already had a 2003 version of this in 2017, this the 2004 vintage bottled in April 2018.
Only 9.000 bottles worldwide.

September – Springbank Distillery Month – Week 3

A double distilled, heavily peated single malt from Springbank, Longrow was first created as an experiment to make a peated whisky in Campbeltown, but today it has become very popular, thanks to its brazen, muscular character.
