Islay Month – week 2

Laphroaig Distillery is beautifully situated in the south of Islay and is one of the three “Kildalton Distilleries”. The Gaelic name means “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay”.

In 1994 the Friends of Laphroaig Club was established, members of which are granted a lifetime lease of one square foot (<0.1 m²) of land on the island of Islay. The annual rent is a dram of Laphroaig which can be obtained upon visiting the distillery where you can also visit your plot of land. In spring 2013 there were already more than 600,000 friends of Laphroaig worldwide.

The 2014 Cairdeas release (“Cairdeas”, pronounced ‘car-chase’, means ‘friendship’ in Gaelic) was matured in bourbon barrels and Amontillado hogsheads.

Created by Laphroaig Master Distiller John Campbell, it’s bottled at 51.4% abv.

ISLAY month – 1st week

The Scottish Isle of Islay is part of the southern Hebrides and is inhabited by about 3,228 people. The Isle of Islay is also called Queen of the Hebrides. With 8 working whisky distilleries, the stunning scenery, amazing wildlife and all the friendly people, Islay is a five star holiday destination.

This month we like to focus on some of the whisky coming from this renowned island.

Our first bottle is  a 28 year old Bunnahabhain, independently bottled as part of the Cask Strength Collection by Signatory.

This distillery is often overlooked for some reason, but so far I’ve never had a bad Bunnahabhain. Maybe it is because they often make unpeated whsky, which is rather an exception for distilleries from this island?

This full-bodied Islay single malt was distilled in October 1989 and left to age in a single hogshead cask until March 2018, when it was bottled with an outturn of just 215 bottles.

48,4% vol.alc.

70 cl.

Efva an artistic Mackmyra and some Vinterglöd matured in mulled wine casks – Final 1.5 week of Mackmyra Month

Moment Efva is an elegant single malt whisky produced from a creative collaboration with jewellery designer, Efva Attling.

Following a tour at Mackmyra’s main storage in Bodås, Efva has – together with Master Blender, Angela D’Orazio – handpicked some of our finest casks. The 19 casks that caught Efva’s attention were mainly Oloroso, American oak and ex-Bourbon barrels, a majority of which had been saturated with Swedish birch tree sap wine.  After a request to create more prominent sweetness, resulted in the use of a cask which had previously held cherry wine.

The result is a sophisticated and fruity whisky, with soft notes of oak and birch, combined with slight spicy tones of red berries.

The edition is ornamented with a polished silver cork, designed by Efva.

Mackmyra Vinterglöd (winter glow) is an elegant Swedish single malt whisky distilled at Mackmyra Bruk. This whisky is inspired by the Swedish winter tradition of drinking mulled wine during the colder months of the year.

Vinterglöd carries notes of orange, candied fruit and almond, together with oak and a ginger-like spiciness. The aromatic profile of the whisky comes from its aging in casks that previously held Swedish mulled wine and Pedro Ximénez Sherry. An unique choice for your winter traditions!

Vinterglöd is a collaboration with Saturnus Glögg.

Gold from the mine – 3th week of Mackmyra Month

Mackmyra Gruvguld (Gold from the mine) has been aged in small casks of 30, 100 and 128 litres, in the mine of Bodås, 50 metres below ground.

This whisky is a tribute to our powerful 30-litres casks that has been with us since the start of Mackmyra, and more than half of the finished result was aged in these casks of different oak types and finishes.

The new make that was aged, is mainly of the unpeated recipe, with an exception of a few smoky casks for a small spiciness addition. In the wide variety of casks used, there are also some that previously stored oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry.
